German reliquary of Saint Sebastian, 1497
this beautiful (and unique!) votive offering was commissioned by Georg Kastner, abbot of Kaisheim Monastery near Augsburg (in southern Germany) during a plague epidemic between 1490 and 1509. if you peer through a little window on one side of the base of this reliquary you can see tiny shards of wood wrapped in silk, probably supposed to be pieces of the arrows with which he was shot.
